In celebration of World Golf Day, Casas do Barlavento summarises the importance of golf for the Portuguese economy and, more specifically, the Algarve.
The truth is that this Scottish sport is increasingly important in combating the traditional summer-only tourism market in the Algarve. It is, undoubtedly, a strategic product for the region and with a tendency for growth, with a 5.3% increase in the number of rounds in 2017, compared to the previous year. In fact, according to the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA), roughly 1,170,000 rounds were played on the golf courses in the Algarve region (end of November 2017), which represents 70% of the total number of golf rounds, proving its essential importance in the offer of tourism in the region.
At present in Portugal, there are 91 golf courses, 43 of them in the Algarve, a destination that can offer an integrated touristic experience (golf, leisure activities, and sunshine all-year-round) that has earned the recognition of professionals.
This appreciation is translated into the election of the Algarve, for the second consecutive year, "Best Golf Destination in Continental Europe" by the Annual Travel Awards 2018 (organisation of the British magazine Today's Golfer). The region also won the "Best Value Golf Destination in Continental Europe" award, which has already been awarded to the Algarve four times (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017).
However, tourism is not the only sector affected by the popularity of golf in the Algarve. The real estate sector also benefits; properties on golf courses are attractive to foreigners who play golf and who are captivated by all the conditions that the region has available. This offer is geared towards a demanding luxury market, so most properties feature top quality finishes, adapted to the comforts of modern living.
