Evolving from a fishing village, Albufeira became one of the most important and well-known tourist centres in the Algarve from the 1960s onwards, currently boasting thousands of inhabitants. During the summer, the city centre, with its shops, bars, nightclubs, and diverse restaurants, comes alive with the presence of tourists from all around the world.

In the outskirts of Albufeira lie some of the Algarve’s most exquisite and renowned beaches, stretching from Falésia Beach in the east to São Rafael Beach in the west. At the southwest tip of the city, there is a marina with 475 mooring spots for recreational boats.

Albufeira is derived from the Arabic Al-Buhera and dates back to the Moorish occupation when the locality was an important trading centre in the 8th century.
